Today I decided to put vibe coding to the test. I decided to pretend I was someone without any programming knowledge, and that my task was to create a very simple game without writing, or even fixing, a single line of code. For this task, I decided to test Google AI Studio, as it's a new tool. How did it go?
Disclaimer: at the time of writing, Google AI Studio is still experimental and not ready for production use, so this experience is not intended to review or evaluate the tool.
I first invented a simple game. Admittedly, not something you would really want to play, but it served the purpose. Based on my prompt, the AI decided to call it "Microwave Madness". The name was actually nice, so I left it.
The game is simple: you work in a restaurant, you have to cook dishes in a microwave. The microwave has fixed cooking times (5s, 10s and so on), and each dish has its own cooking time. You have to put dishes in the microwave, select the closest cooking time to the dish cooking time (within +/- 3 seconds), and start the microwave. If you select a wrong cooking time, the dish will be either raw or overcooked, and you will be fired. Incoming dishes accumulate in a queue, and if more than five dishes accumulate you will be fired as well.
For the record, this is the initial prompt I supplied to Google AI Studio:
"Build a game in Javascript with the following mechanics: in front of you you have a microwave oven, where you can set the cooking time, from 5 seconds to 30 seconds, with a button for each cooking time in steps of 5 seconds, and a start button. Pressing the time button sets the corresponding time, pressing the start button starts cooking. Under the microwave oven, different kind of dishes randomly appear every 5 to 30 seconds. Each dish has its own cooking time, from 5 to 30 seconds. When you drag a dish to the microwave oven, the dish is put into the oven. When the user presses the start button, the oven starts cooking the food. Is the cooking time currently set on the oven is more than 5 seconds shorter than the dish cooking time, or longer than 5 seconds than the dish cooking time, the dish is either undercooked or burnt and the game ends. Otherwise, after the cooking time, the dish is ready and you are awarded 100 points. If the start button is pressed when there is no dish in the oven, the oven explodes and the game ends. Once a dish is cooked, it is automatically removed from the oven and put into a row of cooked dishes above the oven."
The first result actually surprised me in a positive way. The AI was able to create functional code. Here's how the game appears (after a few tweaks I'll desribe below):
However, not all the games mechanics were implemented correctly and I had to ask the AI to perform a series of changes, for example:
- Dishes did not accumulate. A new dish was added only when the previous one had been cooked. I asked the AI to create a queue of dishes.
- After this change, new dishes were enqueued only when the previous dish had been cooked. I had to ask the AI to queue dishes even while a dish was cooking.
- It was possible to drag a new dish on the microwave even if there was a dish already inside. I had to ask to forbid this possibility.
While to fix the above issues I used detailed prompts that told exactly the AI what to do and used technical terms, I also tried to implement some changes using only natural language and let the AI decide. For example, I asked the AI to "make the game more difficult with time" and it chose the strategy autonomously.
These and other changes were handled surprisingly well, and I was able to implement all the desired game mechanics without writing a single line of code.
The problems came when, based on the AI's own suggestion, I decided to add sound effects.
The cool thing is that the prompt was just "add sound effects", and the AI identified the main events and the sounds they needed. However, AI Studio looked for websites that had free audio samples, and added them to the code. The problem is that most of them weren't working, as the website was reporting a 404 or did not allow to link the sound sample directly.
Here is where we got stuck: AI Studio tried to correct the problem multiple times, but all it did was trying different audio samples and different websites that did not work. After a few tries, I asked the AI to find a different approach. The AI answered that it would encode the sounds directly into the application. The result was this file:
// This file contains the Base64 encoded data URIs for all sound effects.
// This approach ensures that sounds are part of the application bundle
// and do not rely on external network requests, making them highly reliable.
export const SOUNDS = {

microwave humming sound',
};
I don't know what the AI actually encoded in those base64 strings... clearly, they're not large enough to store a sound sample. Even worse, this file is not even used! Even if the AI created this file, it did not use it in the code, where it still loaded sounds from websites:
const { play: playAppear } = useSound('https://www.myinstants.com/media/sounds/steam-achievement-popup.mp3');
const { play: playDing } = useSound('https://www.myinstants.com/media/sounds/ding-sound-effect.mp3');
const { play: playExplosion } = useSound('https://www.myinstants.com/media/sounds/explosion_2.mp3');
const { play: playFail } = useSound('https://www.myinstants.com/media/sounds/wrong-answer-sound-effect.mp3');
Since the errors were not disappearing, the AI continued trying to correct them (or, well, I kept asking it to correct them, since that would be the only option for someone who cannot code). However, at this point it looked like the AI was really doing the same thing again and again, just changing the links, and even if every time it claimed it had fixed everything, the errors kept appearing. Sometimes with regressions (sounds that were working before stopped working).
It also started to take more and more time, at the end it took 20 minutes to try to correct the errors, without trying anything new.
At this point, I decided that I had to fix the problem manually. I fixed the wrong links, but I had spent almost two hours working with the AI hoping that it would fix the problem. Had I been someone with no programming knowledge, I would have been stuck.
Even worse, the AI left me with an unused file in the project. I wonder how easy it would be to maintain a large project.
Btw, in the end, to fix the sound issues I chose to download the mp3 files and manually add them to the project. This was the only viable solution (in a production application, you would never rely on resources that are not managed by you and could be taken offline any moment), and the AI did not realize it.
Furthermore, at this point, the sounds did not work anymore when I run the app locally in AI Studio (as the paths were relative to the deployment path, like "/sounds/ding.mp3", so the browser could not find them), but they worked correctly once I deployed the app in Cloud Run. The deployment process was seamless: AI Studio prompted me to create a project, associate a billing account and then handled the whole deployment project.
Fixing bugs on mobile phones
An even greater problem arised when I tried the game on my mobile phone: despite it being a Pixel, and despite the fact that it still uses Chrome, the drag&drop did not work, meaning that I would drag a dish onto the microwave, but nothing would happen.
I described the issue to the AI asking for a fix in the following way: "There is a bug when I run the app on a mobile phone: the drag and drop does not work, meaning that you can drag the dish onto the microwave, but when you release it, it is not put in the microwave but remains in the queue. The browser is Chrome on Android. Can you fix this problem?"
AI Studio seemed confident, as it replied: "Of course! That's a classic issue with web apps on mobile. The standard HTML5 drag-and-drop API has notoriously poor support on touch devices. I'll implement a parallel touch-based system using touchstart, touchmove, and touchend events to ensure a smooth and intuitive experience on mobile phones, just like on a desktop. This will fix the bug and make your game fully playable on any device."
However, even after these changes the bug persisted. I told the AI that the bug wasn't solved and to try a different approach. This time, the fix almost worked (sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt't), I couldn't identify a pattern, but I noticed that, after interacting with different parts of the interface, e.g. scrolling the list, or scrolling the page, the drag worked. So I tried asking for a fix a third time describing the situation, and even this time the AI made some changes and claimed it had identified and solved the issue, but guess what? The issue wasn't solved.
So I was in the same situation of the issue with sounds: the AI claims that it has solved the issue, but the issue is still there. This left me with the feeling that we're still relying on chance with no control on what the AI is really doing. A skilled developer would have identified the issue and solved it completely. For this test, I decided that I didn't need to manually investigate the bug and left it there.
Letting the AI decide how to solve a bug
On mobile, I had another issue, which I described to the AI as follows: "When I'm playing on a mobile phone, the list of incoming dishes does not fit the screen. However, I cannot scroll the list left and right, because as I tap on a dish, the drag starts. Can you find a solution for this problem?"
I wanted to test the AI's capability to offer his own solution, instead of suggesting one. This was the response: "Of course! That's a classic conflict between scrolling a list and dragging items within it on a touch screen. It's a frustrating user experience, and I can definitely fix it.
The solution is to differentiate between a quick "swipe" to scroll and a "press and hold" to drag. I'll implement a short delay when you first touch a dish. If you move your finger quickly, the app will recognize it as a scroll. If you hold it for a moment, it will initiate the drag, allowing you to pick up the dish."
This worked (kudos to the AI), but I had a regression: the code that showed a "forbidden" icon when you drag a dish onto the microwave while a dish is already present was gone. I had to ask the AI to recreate it. What if the regression was in a much less obvious piece of code, something that is executed rarely, or something that doesn't have an obvious visual cue?
Regressions, regressions...
I also tried to add a "high score" feature. I told AI Studio to use a cloud database of his choice in Google Cloud. The AI used local storage instead. But, who knows why, it also decided to change the font of the application with a different font, a pixelated retro-style font which was too small and unreadable.
I asked the AI why it had changed the font and to restore the previous one. The answer always follows this pattern: "Sure, you're right, that was my mistake, now I'm fixing it, now it's fixed". Guess what? The fond hadn't changed at all. I had to explicitly ask to change the font to a standard Serif one.
In short:
- I asked the AI to implement a feature to save the high score in a database
- The AI claimed it has done it, but used local storage instead
- In doing so, it introduced a regression
- I asked it to fix the regression, it claimed it had done it, but hadn't changed anything.
This is a pattern I've noticed more than once, and it is particularly frustrating.
Conclusions
In the end, getting a prototype was easy, but debugging and tweaking the application as desired was much more painful, and sometimes I had the feeling the AI was running in circles. Some things required manual intervention and, most important, some things would have been done faster by someone who already knew the framework. And the application still has dragging issues on mobile.
Several times the AI introduced regressions, did something that was not asked to do, did something different than how I asked it, claimed to have fixed a bug but it hadn't. These are things that make me wonder how suitable a Vibe Coding approach would be in a large project.
Despite these problems, it's obvious what the AI can do is amazing. While programming knowledge and manual intervention are required to fix more complex issues, or design something differently from how the AI would do it, I was able to generate a working piece of software with only natural language inputs and minimal intervention, and deploy it without theoretically knowing anything about how Google Cloud Platform works. AI is changing the life of software developers, and we cannot ignore it. Will it replace us? Probably not, at least for now, but it's an extremely powerful tool which we have to incorporate in our workflows.
I have two questions, though. The first one is: how will software developer learn, if they never have to code? What will they do when they encounter a more serious issue and get stuck? And the second one: AI can only use existing technologies on which it has been trained. How can we make sure this doesn't stop innovation? I guess only time will tell.
